and it is not even isolated to djgpp related commands. even mem produces 
this symptom on my win xp pro.

a related issue is illustrated by

C:\Documents and Settings\asu1>mem
Bad command or file name
Bad command or file name

<mem output snipped>

C:\DOCUME~1\asu1>

notice how the prompt changed to reflect the short name of 
C:\Documents and Settings.

i don't care very much, but i am still curious. any ideas?
