<Alarm bells ringing> Ah-ha. If it's a configure script produced by autoconf
and the package uses libtool, then try running configure like this:

    ./configure --disable-shared

IIRC there's a bug somewhere - in the port of gcc or in libtool - that means
libtool doesn't detect that DJGPP's gcc port doesn't support -fPIC or shared
libraries.
