Yeah, that was it.  I forgot to remove all existing object and executable
files.  Works fine now

Was shpopen.o compiled by DJGPP, or maybe by Cygwin?  If the latter,
you should expect the linking to fail: you cannot mix object files
compiled by different compilers.

It's not a good idea to put the DJGPP's bin subdirectory last on your
PATH.  Otherwise, I don't see anything wrong with your environment.
