Windows 2000 or XP, Right?  This can also corrupt the library.

This problem is in the Windows 2000 Long Name API.  There are 
workarounds.  See http://clio.rice.edu/djgpp/win2k/main_203.htm
You can load the LFN TSR, or refresh your binutils.
