I appreciate your response.  It helps me a lot. 
(And of course it works just fine even if it is different 
from the one that Martin Ambuhl posted)

On a side joke, however, your recommendation:

seems to be platform-specific too, as 'info' could only
find that reference under djgpp, not under 'GNU/Linux'
;-)
