What I suggest is to visit the DJGPP on W2K web page:
  http://clio.rice.edu/djgpp/win2k/main.htm
Visit the link that describes know problems and workarounds

The biggest set of workarounds is to disable long file names. The
long name support in Windows 2000 is buggy, and there are some calls that
just return *WRONG* information if you open the file as a long file name.

We are trying to be creative to work around the MS bugs. Most of them
are there in Windows XP also.

No simple fixes, but there are about a dozen medium effort and 2-3 really
hard ones we're working on. Many things are functional with a few patches,
but not all of them.
