Well, I can understand that point of view.  However, an option that
defaulted to the current behavior but could be specified to override
that behavior wouldn't necessarily be a "bad thing", would it?
Especially if it only overrode the behavior when "long names" were in
effect, so that the "short name" conflicts would not be an issue?

Just my US$0.02 worth.
