I hope you won't need any other links after you read the FAQ ;-)

If something is still unclear after that, please ask specific
questions.

The functions mentioned in the FAQ either expand into fast inline
assembly, or are implemented in optimized assembly.  Experience shows
they are hard to beat.  So you shouldn't worry about performance too
much, at least not until you time your code and find it to be too
slow.
