itoa() is a DOSism, which exists in DJGPP only for the sake of
compatibility to older DOS compilers. For bases 8, 10 or 16, and
portable programs, you should use sprintf() instead. Otherwise, you
have to provide your own implementation of itoa() and use that if
there is none in the libc.

You could have guessed that from the libc documentation. "info libc
alpha itoa" contains this:
