An alternative would be to use gdb over a serial port to communicate to xgdb
or ddd. This would minimize the amount of work that would need to be done,
but would require that one have two computers, a "development" machine and a
"target" machine. Many compilation systems work this way; one such example
would be the gcc port to MIPS/PMON done by Algorithmics.

I have not done this, but in reading the docs for gdb, ddd and xgdb, I am
under the impression that this should already be a feature of gdb (e.g., the
-b parameter, set baud rate for remote debugging).
