Dunno about ANSI.SYS, but winME and DJGPP work together fine for me.
I don't remember what I did with AUTOEXEC (probably just cleared hidden
attribute), but any changes to it worked fine for me.
Other way to set up environment variables is to run msconfig.exe utility.
