bash --version tells me I have 2.03.0(1)-release (i386-pc-msdosdjgpp)
r0.6. So this seems the same too.

I'm using what was Windows 98. Using START : WINDOWS UPDATE, I have
updated it up to and beyond SP1, which should make it similar to what
you have (but not identical).

Yes.

c:/local/djgpp/bin/perl.exe

I get no matches for

env |grep -i perl

or

env |grep -i poo

It is interesting that you do not see the problem. I assume this is due
to some difference in the state of our operating system or other major
software installations.
