Which version of the Allegro library are you using ?
For the latest stable release (3.12), have a look at ex16.c in the examples
directory.
For the current WIP release (3.9.33), which is quite stable on the DJGPP
platform, the file is called exmidi.c.

And of course you can also use the Allegro mailing list
(allegro AT canvaslink DOT com) to ask for Allegro-specific stuff like that one.
