I'm green :)P   I'm beginning to wonder if I should have bought a 3D card
for 2D work instead.

ATI have very little incentive to deny programmers the opportunity to write
for their hardware.
It is only certain *software* houses that like to keep secrets like that.

If you promise not to divulge and disperse the chip specs I'm sure they'll
let
you at some programming details.

Otherwise I've been told by everyone that the XFree86 has the best open
specs of video hardware.

Information obtained by empirical (suck and see) methods is no longer
proprietary to ATI, so they may
actually prefer driver-writers to work only from the official spec

One gotcha if you are US citizen (or worse NOT) is the U.S.G 's definition
of Military Potential which includes
PSX2s and certain 3D cards.  It might help if you specifically exclude the
Radeon from your request.
