We are getting somewhere. When pclose returns a positive number, it
is the exit status of the child program. So you need to understand
what does exit status 4 of rsh means; I'd expect that to be explained
in the rsh docs.
Since rsh is a kind of shell, it might be possible that 4 is coming
from dd on the remote machine, so dd's docs might also prove useful.
