You could use the DJGPP port of bash (v2gnu/bsh*b.zip). That should
save you lots of this. Thanks to Mark E, who ported it. Apart from that
you might also need Fileutils and Sh-utils (vgnu/fil*b.zip and
v2gnu/shl*.zip).
Installing Textutils (v2gnu/txt*b.zip) would also be a good idea.

I'd recommend you to run the configure script under Win 9x where LFN is
supported. Otherwise, it can be a pain. You'll have to write scripts to
modify
the configure script itself (but that's how most of the people do it when
they
port packages).
