*Everything* crashes, just because you *linked* it? Or does it just
not link, maybe even spit out an error message. 

Either way, that shouldn't ever happen.  Not unless some hard disk
writing problem severely damaged either your linker executable, or the
library file itself. You may want to unpack (or recompile) the library
again, and compare it to what you currently have on your harddisk.
