No that didn't help and I don't have Cygnus if that matters. I did have a
successful build from a DOS prompt in case you missed a previous post.

Maybe a clue:
The readme file in gdb-5.0/gdb/config/djgpp says that I can specify a build
directory like so:
sh ./gdb/config/djgpp/djconfig.sh d:/gnu/gdb-5.0
but it won't let me do that from either DOS or from bash.
(I used sh ./gdb/config/djgpp/djconfig.sh c:/gnu/gdb-5.0). This is what I 
get:

Checking the unpacked distribution... FAILED.

You MUST unpack the sources with the DJTAR command, like this:

         djtar -x -n fnchange.lst gdb-X.YZ.tar.gz

where X.YZ is the GDB version, and fnchange.lst can be found
in the gdb/config/djgpp/ directory in the GDB distribution.
configure FAILED!
