Most packages (e.g. Allegro) compile fine that way.

Nope.  I'm still mortal :-)  I just have experience reading
readme-ese, as I also have experience with legalese.

Now that man part...  I'm not terribly happy being human.  Perhaps
having a body shape like the Precious Moments kids would be cuter...

Then go play Quake.  It's open-source software too.

And compiling it in DJGPP is reported to be as easy as turning on
UNIX-style sbrk() and writing a very simple makefile.
