I've spent some time on this. There are some obvious problems:
 - the Java compiler isn't very DOS-friendly (the 2.95.2 release doesn't
even support DOS-based zip files! (fixed in snapshot))
 - networking support. Even though java.net can be disabled, some files
still require networking. These can, however, be patched
fairly easily (and with the DJGPP libsockets they may even be usable
unchanged).
 - No threading (but the build is supposed to support this).
With some fairly minor adjustments the library can be compiled. There are
however some as-yet-undiscovered issues that prevent
the result from functioning. For one thing, the interpreter (gji) doesn't
work: it simply hangs or crashes. This MAY be a threading
issue, or a problem with the garbage collector.
Feel free to ignore this post; it's been several months since I downloaded
and tried to compile a snapshot. Everything I mention above
may have already been fixed.
