Did you get fresh version of a VESA driver ?

IIRC it's needed anyway for having VESA on CL-GDs.
The cited "SVGA02" pack runs well on such a card.
Besides bugs some cards don't provide all functions
(e.g. status buffer) and it might appear as an error!
