Ideally, ptrdiff_t would be one bit larger than ssize_t, and it would
be signed.  Unfortunately, the 386 doesn't have a 33-bit signed type,
so we make do with a 32-bit signed type.

Imaging ssize_t being 8 bits.  Values are 0..255.  Possible
differences would range from 255 (255-0) to -255 (0-255), so there
would be 511 possible values.  You'd need 9 bits, signed, to hold
that.
