Protected mode is a mode in Intel processors that demolishes the 1 MB
DOS memory barrier, allows arrays larger than 64K, and protects the
memory of one process from the memory of another process (provided the
OS's memory manager can handle it).  Read more about it in the DJGPP

Most protected mode programs for DOS are written to an API called
DOS Protected Mode Interface, which needs a DPMI server such as
CWSDPMI or Windows's.
