Originally, the 'V' bit signified Volume names (the ones you can
change with the 'label' command, or at formatting time --- you'll find
one in the root directory).

Later, M$ seems to have hijacked the bit for LFN purposes.

For practically every purpose, you can just ignore all directory
entries with the 'V' bit set. Unless you're trying to write your own
LFN driver for raw DOS, that is.
