anytime you service an asyncronous(?) interrupt like the timer you have to
restrict yourself to not useing other system services. you must also assume
that the registers and stacks ect are all wrong at entry to the timer
routine and you must return with all the registers unchanged and be prepared
to handle multiple calls if needed...
