Hello Charles,
Most often this happens because you haven't downloaded 
bnu281b.zip  which contains the linker and assembler from 
wherever you got DJGPP. 

"cannot exec as" means that gcc can't find the assembler which 
most probably is because you haven't downloaded the bnu281b.zip.

Please consider going to <www.delorie.com> and using the zip-
picker which would give you a list of zip's to download, so you can 
see whether you have missed out on any others.
