Allegro 3.9.30 might be easier to get your feet wet in than GRX.

Once you get Allegro installed, surf on over to
http://yerricde.tripod.com/binaries/arena.tar.gz
to download source for a complete T*tr*s clone and other
action puzzle games done in Allegro for DJGPP or Linux GCC.
