Because you won't be in msdos forever. If you're trying to
write portable programs, use ncurses. A version comes with
Linux and most other *n?x, and it has been ported to DJGPP.
IIRC you can get the DJGPP version at the Zip Picker.

If they took out conio support in future releases of Windows
2000, it would break just about every DOS program, and
many of us would leave MS and head to www.lineo.com
or www.freedos.org
