Simple. C++ has been so completely over-hyped that anything with C++ on
the cover will sell. (I'm not flaming C++, but the publishing houses are
well 
aware that most newbies have the mis-conception that C++ is a better version
of C, instead of the different language that it is.)

Besides, this went on before C was standardized as well. For the longest
time, 
*every* compiler was proprietary.
