You are, at least in your conclusion that you would need to switch to
Windows, for this to work. Quite a number of current DJGPP's GNU
software packages *are* compiled using the autoconf-generated
makefile. The drawback is that you usually have to patch the
'configure' shell script in various places, and/or start it in a
rather specialized DJGPP Bash session, using flags like 'PATH_EXPAND'
and 'SYSROOT' to make DJGPP Bash behave more Unix-centrically than it
usually would.
