DPMI stands for DOS protected mode interface not Linux protected mode
interface.

Then open a DOSEMU box and use DJGPP. :-)
DOSEMU, if properly configured, supports DPMI.

Most programs that are written for both DOS and Linux (namely the
Allegro library) use special linux/*.c and djgpp/*.c for memory
allocation, video access, and other platform-specific functions.

For conio-ish support, use a curses-type library.
