If you need exceptions support, upgrade to the latest GCC version.  
Version 2.8.1 didn't support them very well.

-fsljlj-exceptions is dog slow.  In addition, the whole support for 
exceptions (and, indeed, for most C++ features) is not very good in 
versions of GCC before 2.9x.
