That's Allegro's normal behavior. It restores the last used
video mode on exit because DOS knows nothing about
any Mode X variant, such as the Mode Z you are setting
with your example above. Just do your work before you
exit, and everything will be fine.

There is an article above ("Re: bitmap question") that
demonstrates how to draw a bitmap to Mode Z.
