It seems that I am talking to myself, but here is the last news about
my jpeg problem for those who are interested (anybody?). I have traced
it all back to a bug (or bad installation?) in WinZip 6.2 with respect
to tar archives. I had downloaded the gzipped tar archive and unpacked
it using Winzip on the "bad" machine whereas I had unpacked it using
Windows Commander on the "good" machine. The result was a "testimg.ppm"
of 101,484 bytes on the good machine and a "testimg.ppm" of 101,487
bytes on the bad machine. Winzip however reported the file size as
101,484 bytes. The effect of these 3 extra bytes were a green rose
instead of a red one and bad test results. When I unpacked it with
djtar on the bad machine the file had the correct size (and color) and
the tests were correct too.

So don't fall in the same trap as me: all test images of the
independent jpeg group library are of the same *RED* rose.
