It can be - it allows you to use conventional functions on video
memory if so desired. This does for instance facilitate writing bitmap
functions which work on bitmaps in main memory *or* video memory.

This can occur in a *buggy* program... in any case, it is not *likely*
to cause data loss.
I successfully used the nearptr "hack" when writing a game last year.
Most programming erros (access violations etc) were still caught, and
I certainly didn't suffer any data loss.
