    I think you misunderstood me.  I wasn't saying that it wasn't network
related.  All I was saying was that network time-out's are usually much shorter
than 5 seconds (especially for invalid machine names).  I don't understand why
Windows would treat C:\\name different than \\name, as you have pointed out
earlier that "C:" gets added to the beginning anyways (or whatever drive is the
default), before UNC identification.
    I agree that C:\\foo and C:\/foo both cause network traffic, but I don't
understand why Windows waits longer for "C:\\foo" than for "\\foo".
