Somewhat different with WinNT4.0 (SP5):
As above 
dir C:\\machine\share
gives a directory listing of \\machine\share but 
cd C:\\machine\share
results in the error message:
"The system cannot find the path specified."
(Writing the argument between double quotes gives same result.)
