Notepad is one of the editors that attach the .txt extension to your 
file.  So you might be thinking that you create average.c, when in fact 
the file is called average.c.txt.  Use DIR to find out the truth, and if 
this is indeed the case, rename the file.

Yes, it is only needed in plain DOS mode.
