IMHO DOS is not obsolete - I have tried both (I. e. DOS and Windows coding)
and although I have extremely limited Windows experience, and only a little
bit more DOS experience, I would say learning DOS coding is easier - a
simple RSXNTDJ windows program for example is about two or three pages of
code just to do the classic "hello world" tipe of thingy. DJGPP DOS code is
so simple - you just put printf("Hello\n"); and that's it!

Plus, I think DOS coding can be a boon if, for instance, you must later
develop embedded stuff that might be burned into chips or whatever, where
you usually do not have the luxury of megabytes of memory that can contain
all those gazillions of API functions and widgets and stuff that Windows
programming is so fond of.

Take note that this is a newbie's opinion - do you think ng's like
comp.os.msdos.djgpp would still exist if DOS was really oboslete?

I don't think so!
