Ah sorry, I forgot to mention I'm only just taking my first *very*
tentative steps into the wonderful world of unix. For the moment I'm
still running dos/command.com, and I've yet to take the plunge and
install one of the unix-like shells. I'm moving in that direction, but
slowly...

FWIW I had a good dig around SimtelNet in the msdos/txtutl area, and
came across several tools to do the above - one of the best being
"global search and replace" (gsar110.zip). In the longer term (when I
have more time to really get to grips with it), I'm planning on
following Martin's advice re: Perl...
