This is not a better way. By switching off the protection you loose one
important aspect of pmode, plus it will not be very useable in NT or Linux.

As far as speed is concerned you'll only gain a few cycles by using `near
pointers'. The best way (IMHO) is to use double buffering and flip the page
using dosmemput.
