With a Subject like "strftime BROKEN", his response is not unwarranted. 
Do you realize what YOU did is pretty much equivalent to yelling at the
top of your lung to the WHOLE WORLD: "This VCR is BROKEN, it flashes
'12:00' all the time".

And when someone pointed out "Maybe you should read the manual first!",
you respond with "You are incredibly rude".

Incidentally, some of the rudest people on the internet are incredibly
polite in real life.  The internet simple provides them a rare chance at
practicing some of the choice words that they don't usually say to real
people.  Don't take any of this personally, especially if this is your
first time.
