<strstream>, while deprecated, is very much part of standard C++.  "Deprecated"
means that you should not rely on it to be in future standards.  So far, I
haven't seen a <sstream> for djgpp.

You are not right.  Not only can you use <strstream>, but you can always fall
back on ssprintf().
