I got into BASIC when I must have been about that age but I stayed in it
TOO long.  I ended up making a wireframe 3D engine in it at 9yrs old.  I
got a lot of bad habits from learning BASIC.

Make sure that he switches over to something better like C++ before it's
too late. :)
