I started programming about 5 years ago (when I must have been 8) with
QuickBASIC, and some 1983 Usborne BASIC books. Most of it worked fine - my dad
helped me with the few things that were different from what the books said
('LOCATE 1, 10: PRINT "HELLO"' instead of 'PRINT TAB(10,1), "HELLO"' or
something like that...)
About 6 months ago I started making better (ie graphical) games, and
discovered DirectQB which (a bit like Allegro) lets you do graphical things in
QuickBasic. Also, just a few days ago, I started making my first game with
DJGPP and Allegro (I've had a small understanding of C for about a year, but
never done much with it)
One of the best things about QuickBASIC is that a smaller version (QBasic)
comes with DOS and is on the Windows 95 and 98 CDs (do a search for
'qbasic.exe'). For some tutorials, try searching around at www.qbasic.com or
www.quickbasic.com, which may have some beginner's guides...
