The windows dos box is a kluge, meant to assure compatibility with older
text-mode programs that make assumptions about the screen size instead of
checking it first.

For what it's worth, you can change the number of lines in the dos window
display in its Properties box under Screen, Initial Size.  You must then
exit and restart the dos window for the change to take effect, then you
fiddle with the font setting.  It does give you very limited scroll bars
but not a true scroll buffer.

Changing the number of columns can only be done in full-screen dos mode, by
changing the vga display mode.  There are any number of little standalone
programs to do this.
