A good book on graphics that discusses VGA registers and asm is Michael
Abrash's
"Zen of Graphics" or "Zen of Graphics II" or "The Black Book on Graphics
Programming",
which is the latest one.

This book, like any other low level graphics book that goes into assembly
code, assumes
you already know assembly language. If you don't, then you probably should
try
something on a higher level. If you're using djgpp and allegro you really
don't need to
know about the VGA registers to do graphics.
