I suppose you could, but I wouldn't want to.  Do yourself a favor and
look around the web for PFE, the Programmer's File Editor, at least. Vim
or Emacs would be even better, but for starters, PFE will probably be a
little closer to what you are used to. With all the free editors
available that are actually designed with programming in mind, Word just
doesn't cut it. 

While you are getting started, perhaps an even better bet would be
rhIDE. It will handle a lot of the housekeeping chores, and let you
concentrate on learning the language.
