Please read section 14.2 of the DJGPP FAQ list.  It explains why this
can happen, and gives advice how to get better performance from newer
versions of the compiler.  (Hint: your optimized set of compiler
switches might be too specific to the old compiler version.)

They are two different products.  GCC is a compiler, while DJGPP
includes header files and libraries for that compiler.

Yes, you can.  But 2.8.1 should be a better and a faster compiler, so
you should seriously consider using it anyway.
