90% of the code in a telnet program has nothing to do with setting up the
TCP connection, it has to do with terminal management and telnet option
processing.  There are a number of books on socket programming, which
should explain what you need to know.  One of the best is "Unix Network
Programming" by W. Richard Stevens.  Even though you're not using Unix,
Winsock is based on Unix sockets, so the book should be useful.
